Tallahassee – Where Life Begins


Tallahassee is the only incorporated municipality in Leon County. The population in 2008 was just over 170,000 and the metropolitan area was approximately a little over 360,000 as of 2009. The city is known as a ‘college city’ and is also a center for agriculture and trade within the state of Florida. The schools in Tallahassee include:

As well as the number of colleges present, the area is one of the fastest growing when it comes to high tech economics and manufacturing. The employers within Tallahassee include many that are considered private employers such as the Municipal Code Corporation, General Dynamics and many lobbying organizations, national law firms and professional associations. Two of the ones you may recognize are the Florida Chamber of Commerce and the Florida Bar. The area is also known as a scientific research center and is where the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory is located.

Tallahassee has an area of 98.2 square miles. 95.7 of these miles are land and the remaining 2.5 square miles are water. Tallahassee is somewhat hilly considering that most of Florida is flat. The elevation is varied from sea level to 200 feet. The state capitol is at one of the highest elevations in the city. There are many lakes in the area and Lake Talquin is named as a combination of Tallahassee and Quincy, which is nearby.

There are many varieties of plants located in Tallahassee and the palm trees that you see are the types that are a little more tolerant of the weather such as the Sabal Palmetto. Tallahassee has a little colder weather during the winter than many areas of Florida due to their northward location. There are many magnolias, pines and oaks that are the prevailing trees gown here.

Tallahassee is one place where the weather is sometimes intense and temperature can reach over 100 degrees in the summer. The only time in history recorded when this city was below 0 degrees was in 1899 during the Great Blizzard of 1899.

Several close calls from hurricanes have been experienced when it come to the season. However, since the Hurricane Kate in 1985, there has not been a direct hit on this Florida town.

Awards include the 1992 Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation and the 1999 All- American City by the National Civic League. The National Arbor Day Foundation also awarded Tallahassee Tree Line USA in 2003. The Best in America Parks and Recreation aware was earned in 2006 and awarded by the National Recreation and Park Association.

Tallahassee is the choice of many when looking for the perfect Florida destination. The proximity to the amenities of the state plus the colleges that are available and the wonderful lifestyle of not being far from the beaches make this a terrific place to call home.
