Homes in Tallahassee Green Building Program
Builders of homes in Tallahassee are being encouraged to construct energy efficient homes and as an incentive a program was put into place in April 2010. The U.S. Department of Energy funded the Residential Green Building Incentive Program. This program is a pilot program established by the Tallahassee City Commission and will provide financial encouragement for the construction of “green” homes in Tallahassee.
The homes will feature elements such as site management, indoor air quality and water conservation as well as the lot choices and material resources in order to be environmentally friendly. The Green Building Program is a combination of the Residential Green Building Incentive Program and the ENERGY STAR Certified New or Renovated Home Program.
This ENERGY STAR program was already in existence as a city program that provided rebates for homes that met the energy efficiency guidelines as set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Existing homes in Tallahassee that are participating in the Residential Green Building program can also participate in the ENERGY STAR program.
What homes in Tallahassee are eligible for this incentive? The owner of the home or the builder must submit proof the building is "green" certified from one of three of Florida's certification organization. They are National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), Florida Green Building Coalition (FGBC) or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED).
The homes in Tallahassee that are eligible must be within the utility service area of the City of Tallahassee and served by these utilities. A maximum allowance of $2,250 per home is the incentive offered presently. This is $1.50 per square foot for homes up to 1500 square feet.
The homes in Tallahassee that are eligible must also be either single family, duplexes, triplexes or quadraplexes that had a building permit by January 1, 2010. The funding is limited so these are the only homes eligible presently. The funding is presently $115,000 and the program will operate until these funds are used.
The incentive will be considered for homes in Tallahassee, if owners or builders complete an application and submit documents as proof of the home's certification to the Dept. of Environmental Policy and Energy Resources.
